What is the PE Exam?

The Professional Engineer (PE) Exam is a standardized test administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES). It assesses your competency in a specific field of engineering, in this case transportation engineering and is a vital step toward becoming a licensed Professional Engineer in the United States.

Criteria for taking PE exam:

  • Have completed a four-year ABET-accredited engineering degree.
  • Have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Have met the work experience requirements (typically 4 years) under the supervision of a licensed PE.
    • Disclaimer: you may or may not give your PE exams before completing your 4 years experience. In Texas you can take your exams before completeing the 4 year experience criteria.
    • In some states graduate degree counts towards 1 year of experience required for PE license.
